Carbon Assets Management

Carbon Trading

Carbon trading, based on the directives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, is a virtual trading system for carbon dioxide emission targets among nations. It serves as a market-driven pathway towards the development of a low-carbon economy. Since the initiation of the EU ETS in 2005, emission trading systems have been expanding worldwide. The total global emissions under these systems are projected to increase by nearly 70% in 2020 compared to 2019, according to the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) Status Report 2019. Furthermore, it's anticipated that the carbon price will exceed 60 USD/tCO2 by 2025, as reported by the Carbon Price Leadership Coalition (2017) in the Report of the High Level Commission on Carbon Prices.

Carbon Investment Consultancy

Carbon has evolved into a fluid and investable asset class, with daily trades amounting to approximately US$1 billion across physical carbon, futures, and options. With its appealing historical returns and low correlation with other asset classes, carbon presents a potentially attractive component within a diversified portfolio.

The carbon sink market is experiencing significant demand. Airlines globally, for instance, have started monitoring their carbon emissions as part of a UN climate deal known as the "CORSIA" scheme. CORSIA is expected to offset around 2.5 billion tonnes of carbon emissions from 2021 to 2035, averaging 164 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This is comparable to the total annual emissions from the Netherlands.

Carbon Assets Financing

The characteristics of carbon assets inherently enable them to serve as collateral for pledge financing. For companies with substantial emission allowances or emission reduction credits, pledge financing not only introduces new financing avenues but also, crucially, cultivates a new profit model through the utilization of this new asset.

The introduction of green bonds marks a significant milestone in the global advancement of green finance, fostering the green economy and the burgeoning low-carbon environmental protection industry. The significance of green financial bonds lies in their potential to drive the growth of the green industry and facilitate economic structural transformation.

In 2020, we anticipate a surge in global green bond sales to $425 billion, a roughly 50% increase in global green bond issuance compared to the previous year. An increasing number of corporations and governments are opting for securities specifically designated to finance environmentally-friendly projects.
